About section

See local life in Tanzania, from Maasai villages to community projects at the foot of Kilimanjaro

The programme is based in Monduli, a district in the Arusha region in northern Tanzania. You'll work closely with the local Maasai communities, contributing to projects that make a difference to the daily life of women, children and families in the village.

The available projects cover everything from teaching English in the local schools to women's empowerment, environmental conservation and getting to know Maasai culture. Each participant can pick the project that suits them.

You'll be based at a centre surrounded by green and the mountains of Monduli, sharing meals, evenings and days with other volunteers from around the world. The night sky here is striking: you can see the Milky Way with the naked eye.

FAQs

🏡 Monduli volunteer centre, Arusha

The centre is in the heart of Monduli village, set within a local school campus surrounded by open green spaces and the mountains of the Rift Valley. The atmosphere is simple and grounded, just what you'd expect from a hands-on volunteering trip.

🔹 Shared rooms

Rooms sleep 2 to 6 people, with beds and linen included. There's no Wi-Fi, but you can stay connected by picking up a local Halotel or Airtel SIM, which are easy to find in town.

🔹 The basics for daily life

Bathrooms are shared, with both Western and traditional toilets around. Showers are hot, though in some cases you'll heat the water yourself. Rooms are lockable. Laundry is by hand, with buckets and brushes available. Towels aren't provided, so bring one from home.

🛏️ What's included

- 3 meals a day on weekdays, 2 at weekends (brunch and dinner)
- Water and tea always available
- Bed linen
- Hot shower
- Lockable rooms
- Hand-washing kit for laundry

🤝 A space to meet and share

The centre is a meeting point for volunteers from around the world. Evenings are spent together in the garden, with films on the big screen, group games and BBQs under a striking starry sky. A few minutes away you'll find shops, a small market, a pharmacy and an ATM. Arusha is about an hour away on the local dala-dalas.
🔒 Safety first

Your safety is something we take seriously. Every part of the programme is set up to give you a calm, well-supported and well-organised experience.

🔹 Background checks and safe spaces

Every participant is asked to provide a criminal record check (DBS or equivalent) before travelling. This keeps things safe for you, the other volunteers and the communities we work with.

🔹 High safety standards

Our local partner has been operating in Tanzania for years and has hosted thousands of international volunteers. The programmes are built for adults aged 18+ and are kept under regular review for quality and safety.

🔹 24/7 support

You'll always have a local coordinator reachable by phone and on WhatsApp. On top of that, our UK team is available 24/7 for anything you need.

🔹 Briefing and orientation

Before you travel, you'll get a full guide with all the practical info. Your first day on site is given over to orientation: rules, culture, safety and tips for getting the most out of the trip.

🔹 A few sensible habits

Tanzania is welcoming and friendly, but a few simple habits go a long way:

- Avoid showing valuables in public and keep your phone in your pocket in busy markets.
- Travel as a group after dark and follow your local coordinator's advice.
- Respect local customs; modest dress is appreciated, especially in the Maasai villages.

💡 Our aim

A safe, well-supported environment so you can focus on what really matters: spending time, sharing skills and learning alongside the local community.
🧭 Orientation day

The first Monday is fully dedicated to orientation. No rush, no projects, just time to settle in, get to know the group and figure out how everything works.

🔹 What happens on the first Monday

The day is structured to give you everything you need:

- Welcome meeting, programme introduction and house rules
- Practical tips on health, safety and local etiquette
- Introduction to Tanzanian culture and a hands-on Swahili lesson
- A walk around the area: shops, the small market, the pharmacy, the ATM and where to get a local SIM
- A walk in the Monduli mountains (weather permitting)

📱 Staying connected

Local SIMs (Halotel, Airtel) are easy to pick up in town and give you a steady connection for messages, maps and calls.

🤝 A first step into the community

Orientation is when the connections start, with the other volunteers, the local team and the area. From Tuesday the projects kick off and the weekly rhythm settles in.
The main airport is Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), the main hub in northern Tanzania. As an alternative you can land at Arusha Airport, smaller but closer to the centre.

Recommended day and arrival window: Sunday, between 06:00 and 18:00. That's when our transfer coordinator will be waiting at the arrivals exit, holding a sign with your name.

Saturday arrivals: possible, but you'll need to book an extra night at the centre in Monduli.

If you arrive outside the pickup window, you'll need to make your own way to the centre. The simplest option is a taxi from JRO airport to the Monduli bus terminal (about 100 USD), or a taxi to the Arusha bus station (about 50 USD) followed by a local minibus to Monduli (about 1,500 TZS).

The coordinator will be waiting outside the main arrivals hall. If you can't spot them straight away, stay at the meeting point and wait at least 20 minutes; they may be in traffic. If needed, ring the number we'll send you by email before you travel.

📱 A quick tip

Pick up a local SIM at the airport so you can stay in touch with the local team, the other volunteers and people back home.

Transfer times: from Kilimanjaro Airport to the centre in Monduli takes around 2–2.5 hours by car. From Arusha Airport, around 40–50 minutes. The transfer can be shared with other participants arriving the same day.

⚠️ Important: don't leave the meeting point and don't try to make your own way to the centre if you've booked the transfer. Stay where you are; the team will get to you.

🚖 Heading home: return flight tips

The return transfer to the airport isn't included. You can sort it with help from the local coordinator. Allow plenty of time (2–2.5 hours for JRO) and book a return flight in the afternoon to give yourself a buffer.

🗓️ Carrying on with your trip elsewhere

Let us know in advance and we'll share useful tips so your departure goes smoothly.
