About section

A project bringing together children, schools and community

In Monduli, between mountains and Maasai villages, schools do their best with simple resources and large classes. Many children get few chances to practise their English or take part in creative learning.

That's why this project exists: to support the teachers in a practical way and create learning moments that go beyond the textbooks, with games, songs and everyday activities. Each volunteer brings not just help in the classroom, but time, energy and attention.

You'll help the children learn English in a hands-on, fun way, work alongside the teachers and live the community from the inside. A grounded, hands-on experience that brings together schooling, daily life and cultural exchange.

Why participate

FAQs

During your stay in Monduli you'll live at the project centre, hosted within a school campus surrounded by mountains and nature. The accommodation is simple and no-frills, set up to give you a grounded experience close to the local community. Rooms are shared (2–6 people), lockable, with beds and linen provided. Bathrooms are shared: showers sometimes have hot water, other times you'll heat water using a bucket.

There's no Wi-Fi at the centre, but you can pick up a local SIM easily to stay in touch.

The common areas are the heart of life at the centre: a big garden to relax in, shared spaces for meals and evening activities run by the staff (games, barbecues and group nights). Mosquito nets aren't provided, so we'd suggest bringing your own. Laundry is by hand, with buckets and brushes available, but it can also be a nice moment to chat with the other volunteers.

Meals are prepared by the local team and include three meals a day on weekdays and two at weekends. The food is typically Tanzanian, based on rice, potatoes, maize, bananas and fresh vegetables, with meat or pulses. Drinking water and tea are always available.

The location is convenient and safe: a few minutes away you'll find small shops, markets, local eateries, pharmacies and a hospital. For anything bigger, the city of Arusha is about an hour away on the local minibuses (dala-dala), with shopping centres, cinemas, restaurants and the option to organise safaris or trips into the nearby parks.

🛏️ What's included:

- Shared rooms (2–6 people, lockable)
- 3 meals a day on weekdays, 2 at weekends
- Drinking water and tea always available
- Common areas and a garden for relaxing and socialising
- Ongoing support from the local coordinators
- Evening activities (games, barbecues, films)
- Shops and essentials nearby

The accommodation is more than a place to sleep: it's a meeting point, where you'll share daily life with volunteers from all over the world and get a real feel for local culture. Simple but warm, and the starting point of an experience built on community and exchange.
Your safety is something we take seriously. All our programmes in Tanzania are chosen and monitored carefully so you can settle in to a welcoming and well-supported environment, both at the schools where the activities take place and at the volunteer house in Monduli.

🔹 Background checks and safe spaces

To keep children and local communities safe, every participant is asked to provide a criminal record check (DBS or equivalent) before travelling. We'll send you clear instructions on how to request it.

🔹 Trusted local partners

We only work with schools and communities that regularly host international volunteers. The accommodation is in a safe area, with lockable rooms and the local team always on hand. Our partners host hundreds of volunteers a year and are used to looking after groups of all ages and backgrounds.

🔹 24/7 support

From your arrival at the airport through to the end of the programme, you can count on the local staff being available, evenings and weekends included. Our UK team is also reachable on WhatsApp whenever you need us.

🔹 Briefing and orientation

Before you travel, you'll get a full guide with practical info on culture, behaviour and safety. On your first day on site, you'll join an orientation session with the local team covering house rules, good practice and tips for getting comfortable.

🔹 A few sensible habits

Tanzania is welcoming and friendly, but as anywhere abroad a few simple habits go a long way:
- Avoid going out on your own at night, especially in quieter or poorly lit areas.
- Travel with other volunteers when you can.
- Always follow the advice of your local coordinator.

💡 Our aim is to give you a safe, well-supported environment, so you can focus on what really matters: a meaningful experience with grounded local exchange.
🧭 Orientation day in Monduli

Your time in Tanzania starts with a full day of orientation, a chance to settle in, get to know the local culture and start the project confidently.

📅 On your first Monday, the local team will walk you through an introductory programme that includes:

- Welcome meeting and introduction to the school programme
- House rules and practical tips on health and safety
- A short introduction to Tanzanian culture and a brief Swahili language session
- A walk around Monduli village and the surrounding area: small shops, useful spots and where to get a SIM
- Time to share a meal and break the ice with the staff and the other volunteers

Orientation isn't just a briefing: it's when you start feeling part of the community. Between smiles, first words in Swahili and small local discoveries, you'll start finding the rhythm of the project.

📌 From Tuesday onwards, you'll be into the activities at the primary and secondary schools, working alongside the local teachers and getting to know the rhythm of life in Monduli day by day.
For an easy start, we'd recommend booking your flight to arrive on a Sunday at one of the two airports we use:

Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO): the main international hub, with direct flights from Europe or via Doha, Amsterdam or Istanbul. The transfer to Monduli takes around 2–2.5 hours.

Arusha Airport (ARK): smaller, mainly used for domestic and regional flights. It's the closest to Monduli, with a transfer of around 45–50 minutes.

📌 Recommended arrival window: Sunday between 07:00 and 18:00.

Sunday arrivals (recommended): airport pickup is included.

Saturday arrivals: possible, with an extra night at the centre (small supplement applies).

Out-of-hours arrivals: you can book a private transfer (paid) or get a taxi yourself.

📍 Meeting point at the airport: a member of our staff will be waiting in the arrivals hall with a sign with your name or the project name. If you can't spot them straight away:

Stay at the meeting point (sometimes other volunteers are still arriving).

Wait at least 20 minutes.

If needed, ring the contact numbers we'll send you before you travel.

📱 A quick tip: pick up a local SIM at the airport so you can stay in touch with the local team, the other volunteers and people back home.

🧳 Check-in and check-out: arrival on the Sunday (the day before the project starts). Departure on the Saturday, with check-out by 12:00. Extra nights available on request.

🚖 Heading home: the return transfer isn't included. The local team will help you arrange a taxi or shared transfer.

👉 We'd suggest booking your return flight for the Sunday afternoon or evening, so you have time to get to the airport without rushing.

🗓️ Carrying on with your trip? Want to see more of Tanzania after the project? Safari, Kilimanjaro or Zanzibar: the staff will happily share contacts and safe itineraries.
