About section

In Pejeng, near Ubud, the project supports local schools and helps make English more accessible and fun for children

Many Balinese students learn English only from books, without the chance to practise with native speakers. That's why local schools work with volunteer teachers, creating spaces where children can learn through games, songs and real conversations.

The project comes from the idea that language is a bridge between cultures, and that children grow with more confidence when learning becomes a creative, shared moment. As a participant, you'll prepare lessons in the morning and head into the classroom in the afternoon, bringing fresh ideas and energy that turn English into something fun and useful for the kids' future.

Why participate

Teach creatively

Make English and other subjects more accessible and fun with games, songs and activities the kids will remember.

FAQs

During your stay in Pejeng you'll be based in a volunteer house, a simple, well-kept place 15–20 minutes from Ubud, surrounded by rice fields and village life.

Rooms are gender-shared (4–8 people) with a private bathroom and hot shower; you'll find personal lockers, lockable rooms and common areas to relax, socialise or plan your activities.

Wi-Fi is available in the common areas, and the pool is open from 9:00 to 17:00. There's on-site staff for support and any practical info.

Even with the Wi-Fi, we'd recommend picking up an eSIM for a steady connection during your stay. With Airalo you can buy an international eSIM and have it ready before you leave, so you're connected from arrival. You can grab one easily here.

Food is part of the experience: 19 meals a week prepared Indonesian-style (mie/nasi goreng, gado-gado, tofu/tempeh), with vegetarian options and the chance to flag specific dietary needs in advance.

Filtered water, tea and coffee are always available: bring a refillable bottle, since tap water isn't drinkable. There's a pay-per-use washing machine on site (30,000 IDR/7 kg, sun-dried) or a cheap external laundry service if you prefer.

Nearby you'll find small shops and minimarkets for extras, ATMs a few minutes away, and cafés and restaurants in Ubud just a short drive. Rooms have fans; some listings also mention air conditioning, which we'll confirm before you travel. Towels and mosquito nets aren't provided. On alcohol, follow the staff's guidance: drinking inside the buildings isn't allowed and the policy on outdoor areas can vary by site.

This accommodation is set up to let you live everyday Balinese life with the basics covered, time shared with other participants, and quiet spaces to recharge after the day.
Your safety is something we take seriously. Every programme is carefully chosen and monitored, both at the schools where the activities run and at the centre that hosts you during your stay.

🔹 Background checks and safe spaces

To keep children and local communities safe, every participant is asked to provide a criminal record check (DBS or equivalent) before travelling. We'll send you clear instructions on how to request it. The process is quick and helps us create a calm, reliable setting for everyone.

🔹 Trusted local partners

We only work with schools and communities that offer welcoming, well-organised environments. The accommodation is in a quiet area with controlled access, lockable rooms and the local team always on hand. Our partners in Bali host hundreds of volunteers from around the world every year and are used to working with mixed age groups, from young travellers to senior participants.

🔹 24/7 support

From your arrival to your departure, you'll have ongoing support from the local team, ready to help with anything you need. Our UK team is also reachable on WhatsApp for additional support whenever you need us.

🔹 Briefing and orientation

Before you travel, you'll receive a detailed pack with all the practical info on culture, safety and what to expect. On your first day in Pejeng you'll join an orientation with rules, helpful pointers and tips for getting the best out of your time in a new setting.

🔹 A few sensible habits

Bali is generally safe and welcoming, but it's always worth keeping a few habits in mind:
✔ Don't carry all your valuables when you head out.
✔ Travel in company when you can, especially in the evening.
✔ Always follow the local coordinators' advice on where to go and how to get around.

💡 The aim is to give you a calm, well-supported environment, so you can focus on what really matters: getting to know a new culture and the shared educational experience.
🧭 Orientation day

Your time in Bali starts with a day of orientation, designed to help you settle in straight away, get to know the local community and find your feet safely and confidently.

On your first Monday, you'll join a series of activities led by the local team:

- Welcome meeting, programme introduction and house rules
- A walk around the area, with the main spots and useful info on supermarkets, transport and local SIMs. If you'd rather arrive with an eSIM already active without having to track down a SIM locally, you can buy one before you travel through Airalo, our affiliate partner.
👉 You can do that using this link
- Practical tips on health, safety and everyday habits
- Introduction to Balinese culture, with local customs, traditions and useful insights
- A few basic words in Bahasa Indonesia and common phrases
- A walk around Pejeng and nearby, with shops, markets and useful spots

Orientation is also when you'll get to know the other participants, share what you're hoping to take from the trip, and start building connections that'll make the experience more meaningful.

📌 After this introductory day, from Tuesday you'll get into the school activities and put what you've prepared into practice.
We'd recommend booking your flight into Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar (DPS) on Sunday, any time between 00:00 and 23:59. That's the official arrival window for everyone.

Pickup included: Sunday at 14:00, from the meeting point at Denpasar International Airport, or from Bintang Supermarket in Ubud.

If you arrive on Saturday, you'll need to book an extra night (with a supplement) and an out-of-hours pickup.

If your flight arrives outside the pickup window, you can request a paid private transfer or make your own way (you'll get the contacts and full address before you travel).

The transfer from the airport to Pejeng takes about 1.5–2 hours by car, depending on traffic. You may share it with other participants arriving around the same time.

On arrival, our rep will be at the meeting point with a sign with your name. If you can't spot them straight away, stay where you are: the coordinators will come to you. Once your booking is confirmed, you'll receive all the practical details and emergency numbers by email.

📱 Useful tip: if you'd like internet from the moment you arrive, you can activate an eSIM before you travel with Airalo, our partner. Use this link.

🚖 Heading home

Check-out from the centre in Pejeng is by 12:00 on the Saturday.

The transfer to the airport isn't included: people travel home at different times, so it's easier to handle returns individually.

The staff will happily help you book a private taxi or share a transfer with other volunteers.

We'd suggest booking your return flight for Saturday afternoon or evening, so you have time to leave the place in your own time and get to the airport (allow at least 4 hours including transfer and any check-in queues).

🗓️ If you're carrying on with your trip in Indonesia (towards Ubud, Nusa Penida, the Gilis or elsewhere), let us know in advance: the local staff will happily share useful tips and contacts to help you sort it out.
