About section

In Pejeng, near Ubud, the project supports local schools in making English more accessible and more enjoyable for children

Many Balinese students learn English only from books, without the opportunity to practise it with real speakers. For this reason, local schools work with volunteer teachers, creating spaces where children can learn through games, songs and authentic conversations.

The project is based on the idea that language is a bridge between cultures and that children can grow in confidence when learning becomes a creative and shared moment. As a participant, you will spend time preparing lessons in the morning and then head into the classroom in the afternoon, bringing fresh ideas, new inspiration and smiles that turn English into an enjoyable and useful discovery for their future

Why participate

Teach creatively

Make English and other subjects more accessible and more fun through games, songs and activities the children will remember.

FAQs

During your stay in Pejeng, you will live in a volunteer house, a simple and well-kept property 15–20 minutes from Ubud, surrounded by rice fields and village life.

Rooms are shared by gender (4–8 people) and have a private bathroom with a hot shower; you will find personal lockers, lockable rooms and common areas where you can relax, socialise or plan activities.

Wi-Fi is available in the common areas, and the pool is open from 9:00 to 17:00. There is staff on site to provide support and practical information.

Even though Wi-Fi is available, we recommend buying an eSIM so you have a stable connection throughout your stay. With Airalo, you can purchase an international eSIM that can be activated before departure so you are connected as soon as you arrive. You can get one easily through this link.

Food is part of the experience: 19 meals a week prepared Indonesian-style (mie/nasi goreng, gado-gado, tofu/tempeh), with vegetarian options and the possibility of reporting specific dietary needs in advance.

Filtered water, tea and coffee are always available: bring a refillable bottle, because tap water is not drinkable. On site, there is a pay-per-use washing machine (30,000 IDR/7 kg, sun-drying), and if you prefer, there is also an inexpensive external laundry service.

Nearby, there are small shops and minimarkets for extras, ATMs a few minutes away and, a short drive away, cafés and restaurants in Ubud. The rooms are ventilated (fan); some descriptions also mention air conditioning: we will check exact availability before departure. Towels and mosquito nets are not provided. As for alcohol, always follow the staff’s instructions: consumption inside the buildings is not allowed, and the policy for outdoor areas may vary depending on the centre.

🛏️ Included amenities

- 19 meals a week (3 on weekdays, 2 at the weekend) + water, tea and coffee - Wi-Fi in common areas and spaces for socialising/studying - Personal lockers and lockable rooms - Pool on site (9:00–17:00) - Support from local coordinators and Monday orientation

This accommodation is designed to let you experience everyday Balinese life with essential comforts, shared time with other participants and peaceful spaces where you can recharge after your activities.
The safety of our participants is the absolute priority. All programmes are carefully selected and monitored to ensure a safe environment, both in the schools where activities take place and in the centre that will host you during your stay.

🔹 Participant checks and protected environments

To protect children and local communities, we require every participant to provide a criminal record certificate before departure. In , this document can be requested online, without extra stamp duty costs when taking part in programmes like ours. The process is quick, and we use it as a safeguard to create a calm and trustworthy environment for everyone.

🔹 High safety standards

We work exclusively with schools and communities that offer welcoming, reliable and well-structured environments. The accommodation is located in a quiet area, with controlled access, lockable rooms and the constant presence of local staff. Our partners in Bali host hundreds of volunteers from all over the world every year and are used to managing the complexity of groups of different ages, from younger travellers to senior participants.

🔹 24-hour support

From your arrival until departure, you will have the continuous support of the local team, ready to step in for anything you may need. In addition, our staff in remain available via WhatsApp to offer extra remote support.

🔹 Training and orientation

Before departure, you will receive a detailed guide with all the practical information on culture, safety and behaviour. On your first day in Pejeng, you will take part in an orientation covering rules, best practices and advice for getting the most out of your experience in a context different from what you are used to.

🔹 Good practices for enjoying the experience with peace of mind

Bali is generally safe and welcoming, but it is always important to stay attentive:
✔ Avoid carrying all your valuables with you when you go out.
✔ Prefer moving around with others, especially in the evening.
✔ Always follow the advice of the local coordinators on where to go and how to get around.

💡 The goal is to offer you a calm and protected environment where you can feel at ease and focus on what really matters: encountering a new culture and sharing an educational experience.
🧭 Orientation day

Your journey in Bali begins with a day dedicated to orientation, designed to help you feel at ease straight away, get to know the local community and experience everything safely and with awareness.

During the first Monday of your experience, you will take part in several activities guided by the local team:

- Welcome meeting, programme presentation and house rules
- Tour of the area, with a visit to the main places and useful information on supermarkets, transport and local SIM cards. If you would rather arrive with an eSIM already active, without having to look for a SIM card locally, you can buy one before departure through Airalo, our affiliate partner.
👉 You can do so using this link
- Practical advice on health, safety and daily habits
- Introduction to Balinese culture, with local customs, traditions and curiosities
- A few basic words in Bahasa Indonesia and common expressions
- Tour of Pejeng and the surrounding area, with information on shops, markets and useful points of interest

Orientation is also the moment to get to know the other participants better, share expectations and begin creating the bonds that will make the experience even more meaningful.

📌 After this introductory day, from Tuesday you will move into the heart of the school activities and immediately put into practice what you have prepared.
We recommend booking a flight arriving at Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar (DPS) on Sunday, at any time between 00:00 and 23:59. This is the official arrival window for all participants.

Pick-up included: on Sunday at 14:00, from the meeting point at Denpasar International Airport or from Bintang Supermarket in Ubud.

If you arrive on Saturday, you will need to book an extra night (with a supplement) and the related out-of-hours pick-up.

If your flight arrives outside the pick-up times, you can request a private transfer for an extra fee or reach the accommodation independently (you will receive the contacts and full address before departure).

The transfer from the airport to Pejeng takes about 1.5–2 hours by car, depending on traffic. You may share it with other participants arriving at a similar time.

On arrival, one of our representatives will be at the meeting point holding a sign with your name on it. If for any reason you do not find them immediately, stay at the meeting point: our coordinators will come to you there. After confirmation, you will receive all the practical details and emergency numbers by email.

📱 A useful tip: if you want internet access from the moment you arrive, you can activate an eSIM before departure with Airalo, our partner. Use this link

🚖 Departure recommendations

Check-out from the Pejeng centre is by 12:00 on Saturday.

Transfer to the airport is not included in the programme: this is because participants leave at different times and it is easier for return journeys to be managed independently.

Our staff will still be available to help you organise a private taxi or a shared transfer with other volunteers.

We recommend booking your return flight for Saturday afternoon or evening, so you have enough time to leave the accommodation calmly and reach the airport (allow at least 4 hours for the transfer and possible check-in queues).

🗓️ If you would like to continue your journey in Indonesia (for example to Ubud, Nusa Penida, Gili or other areas), let us know in advance: the local staff will be happy to give you practical advice and useful contacts to help you organise everything.
