About section

Join the local team and help the kids open up to a wider world.

Greenway School gives the children from villages around Siem Reap access to English and a fuller education, in a setting with limited resources and crowded classrooms. Local teachers and volunteers work together to create a welcoming space where the kids can learn and grow. With HeyLocals we support this and other educational sites through trips that bring together group life, cultural immersion and practical support. The contribution of participants helps the lessons land better and gives the kids more chances to practise their English. Travelling as a group from the UK, you'll work alongside the local teams in the morning and afternoon lessons with educational and creative activities. In your free time, you'll get to see Siem Reap, with its markets, pagodas, villages and a feel that sits somewhere between spiritual and full of life.

The programme is a general outline and may be subject to changes depending on the needs of the local organisation, individual skills, and external factors such as the season, weather, etc.

FAQs

🏠 Your accommodation in Siem Reap

You'll be staying at a traditional Cambodian-style guesthouse, set in a quiet part of Siem Reap. Simple but welcoming, with a shared living room and a courtyard where you can relax, have a coffee and spend time with the other volunteers.

🛏️ Rooms and comfort
Shared rooms (2–4 beds, separated by gender)
• Bunk beds, linen provided, personal lockers and lockable doors
Shared bathrooms with running water and cold showers, a classic of local life
Fans and mosquito nets for the night
• No air conditioning or towels (bring your own)

🍽️ Meals
3 meals a day on weekdays, 2 at weekends (brunch + dinner)
Home-style Cambodian cooking, with rice, noodles and vegetables
• Vegetarian options and alternatives on request
Water, tea and coffee always available

🌇 Daily life
The centre of Siem Reap is just 5 minutes on foot or a short tuk-tuk ride away. A minute on foot takes you to small local shops for whatever you need.

📶 Wi-Fi and tips
Wi-Fi is available in the common areas. For internet from the moment you arrive, we'd recommend an eSIM with Airalo: handy for staying connected and finding your way around the city 📱

🪴 What's included
• Shared rooms (2–4 beds)
• 3 meals on weekdays / 2 at weekends
• Free drinks (water, tea, coffee)
• Lockers and lockable rooms
• Wi-Fi in the common areas
• Bed linen provided
Ongoing support from the local team

💛 More than just a place to stay
You won't just be sleeping here, you'll be living together. Between shared meals, chats and cultural exchange, the friendships that come out of this often last well beyond the classroom and the trip itself 🌏
🛡️ Safety and support

Volunteer safety always comes first 💚 In Siem Reap we only work with reliable local schools and partners, in a calm and welcoming setting both in the classroom and at the guesthouse where you'll be staying.

🔹 Background checks
Every volunteer is asked to provide a criminal record check (DBS or equivalent) before travelling. We'll guide you through the process: a simple but key step to keep the experience safe and respectful for everyone.

🔹 Safe, well-monitored sites
• Guesthouse in a quiet, well-connected area
• Lockable rooms and personal lockers
• Local team always around
• Partner schools that have been hosting international volunteers for years

🔹 Ongoing support
From your arrival through to departure, you'll have 24/7 support from the local team. And if you need anything, our UK team is also reachable on WhatsApp in real time 📲

🔹 Briefing and orientation
On your first day you'll join the orientation day: practical info on culture, safety and useful pointers for getting around independently. Before you travel, we'll also send you a full guide with everything you need to know.

🔹 A few sensible habits
✔ Avoid going out on your own at night in isolated areas
✔ Travel with other volunteers or trusted tuk-tuks when you can
✔ Always follow the local team's advice

💡 Our aim
To give you a safe, grounded experience, full of real connections with the Cambodian community 🇰🇭
🧭 Orientation day

Welcome to Siem Reap! Your first Monday is given over to orientation: a moment to discover the city, work out how to get around and start to feel part of the local community.

During the day you'll join a few activities led by the local team:

• Welcome meeting and an introduction to the programme and the guesthouse rules
• Practical advice on health, safety and cultural etiquette
• A short introduction to Khmer culture, with everyday customs and a few first words in Khmer
• A walk around the surrounding area, with info on shops, transport and useful spots
• A visit to the old market and a couple of local temples (Wat Preah Prom Rath, Wat Thmey)
• Help picking up a local SIM, or the option to arrive with an eSIM already active via Airalo

On top of the practical info, this is when you'll meet the other volunteers, share what you're hoping to take from the trip and start building grounded connections.

📌 After orientation

From Tuesday you'll be into the activities at the school, but already after day one you'll feel at home and part of the local community.
✈️ Arrival tips

For an easy start, we'd recommend booking a flight into Siem Reap Angkor International Airport (SAI) on a Sunday, ideally between 06:00 and 18:00. That's when our pickup and transfer service is running.

Saturday arrival → you'll need to book an extra night at the guesthouse, with a small supplement.

Out-of-hours arrivals → pickup isn't included. You can make your own way to the guesthouse or pre-book a special transfer with an extra cost.

Arriving by land (bus or private transport) → the meeting point is at the TGL Cambodia Siem Reap Centre, with welcomes on Sunday at 16:00 (or up to 20:00 if the project is already in Siem Reap).

📍 Meeting point and airport bus

At the airport, a member of our team will be waiting outside the exit with a sign. You'll be taken to the airport bus, which runs between the airport and Siem Reap city at fixed times: 09:30, 11:00, 12:30, 15:00, 16:00, 17:00, 17:30, 20:00. The journey takes about 1 hour and ends at the CDF Duty-Free Store, where our staff will meet you again for the final transfer to the guesthouse. You may need to wait a bit for other volunteers to arrive before the bus leaves. The bus ticket is included in the participation fee.

🧭 If you can't spot our staff

If for any reason you can't spot our team straight away, stay at the meeting point (airport or CDF Duty-Free Store): we'll find each other there. Once your booking is confirmed, you'll get a document with all the direct emergency contacts.

🚖 Heading home

Check-out from the guesthouse is by 12:00 on the Saturday. The return transfer isn't included, since participants have very different flight times. Our staff will happily help you book a taxi or tuk-tuk to the airport or bus station.

🕑 Journey time

The guesthouse is about 10–15 minutes by taxi from Siem Reap airport.

🗓️ Suggested return flight times

We'd suggest booking your flight from Saturday afternoon onwards, so you can leave the guesthouse in your own time and reach the airport without rushing.

🌏 Carrying on with your trip?

If you're planning to keep travelling in Cambodia or another country, let us know in advance: we'll happily share useful tips and contacts.

💡 Once your booking is confirmed

You'll get a detailed document by email with all the latest info, emergency numbers and step-by-step instructions for arrival and departure.
