About section

Join local educators in helping children open up to the world.

Greenway School gives children from the villages around Siem Reap access to English and a more complete education, in an environment with limited resources and overcrowded classrooms. Local teachers and volunteers work together to create a welcoming space where children can learn and grow. Through HeyLocals, we support this and other educational initiatives with trips that blend group living, cultural immersion, and hands-on involvement. Participants' contributions help make lessons more effective and give children more opportunities to practise their English. Travelling as a group , you'll work alongside local teams during morning and afternoon sessions with educational and creative activities. In your free time, you'll explore Siem Reap through its markets, pagodas, villages, and its unique atmosphere — suspended between spirituality and vibrant energy.

FAQs

💛 More Than Just a Place to Sleep
This is more than somewhere to stay — it's where you live together. Over shared meals, conversations, and cultural exchanges, you'll form friendships that go far beyond the classroom and the trip itself 🌏
🛡️ Safety & Support

Volunteer safety is always our top priority 💚 In Siem Reap, we only work with trusted local schools and organisations, in a calm and welcoming environment both inside the classrooms and at the guesthouse where you'll be staying.

🔹 Participant Screening
Every volunteer must provide a criminal background check before departure. We'll guide you through the process — it's a simple but essential formality to ensure a safe and respectful experience for everyone.

🔹 Safe and Monitored Facilities
• Guesthouse in a quiet, well-connected area
• Lockable rooms and personal lockers
• Constant presence of the local team
• Partner schools with years of experience welcoming international volunteers

🔹 Ongoing Support
From arrival to departure, you'll have 24/7 support from the local team. And if needed, our HQ team is always available via WhatsApp to help you in real time 📲

🔹 Training & Orientation
On your first day you'll attend the orientation day, where you'll receive practical information on culture, safety, and tips for getting around independently. Before you depart, we'll also send you a comprehensive guide with everything you need to know.

🔹 Best Practices for a Safe Experience
✔ Avoid going out alone at night in isolated areas
✔ Move around with other volunteers or trusted tuk-tuk drivers
✔ Always follow the advice of the on-site team

💡 Our Goal
To give you a safe, authentic experience full of genuine connections with the Cambodian community 🇰🇭
🧭 Orientation Day

Welcome to Siem Reap! Your first Monday is entirely dedicated to orientation — a chance to discover the city, learn how to get around, and start feeling part of the local community.

Throughout the day you'll take part in various activities guided by the local team:

• Welcome meeting and introduction to the programme and guesthouse rules
• Practical tips on health, safety, and cultural etiquette
• Introduction to Cambodian culture, including fun facts, customs, and a few basic words in Khmer
• Tour of the surrounding area with information on shops, transport, and points of interest
• Visit to the old market and some local temples (Wat Preah Prom Rath, Wat Thmey)
• Help with purchasing a local SIM card, or the option to arrive with an active eSIM via Airalo

Beyond the practical information, it's the perfect opportunity to get to know the other volunteers, share your motivations, and start building genuine connections.

📌 After Orientation

From Tuesday you'll dive straight into activities at the School — but after just one day, you'll already feel at ease and part of the local community.
✈️ Arrival Recommendations

To make the best start to your experience, we recommend booking a flight arriving at Siem Reap Angkor International Airport (SAI) on a Sunday, ideally between 06:00 and 18:00. During this window, our welcome and organised transfer service is active.

Arriving on Saturday → you'll need to book an extra night at our guesthouse, subject to a small surcharge.

Arriving outside the recommended window → pick-up is not included. You can make your own way to the guesthouse, or request a special transfer at an additional cost.

Arriving by land (bus or private transport) → the meeting point is at the TGL Cambodia Siem Reap Centre, with a welcome on Sunday at 16:00 (or up to 20:00 if the project is already based in Siem Reap).

📍 Meeting Point & Airport Bus

On arrival at the airport, a member of our staff will be waiting for you at the exit with a sign. You'll be accompanied to the airport bus, which connects the airport to the city of Siem Reap at fixed departure times: 09:30, 11:00, 12:30, 15:00, 16:00, 17:00, 17:30, 20:00. The journey takes approximately 1 hour and ends at the CDF Duty-Free Store, where our staff will meet you again for the final transfer to the guesthouse. You may need to wait for other arriving volunteers before the bus departs. The bus fare is included in the participation fee.

🧭 If You Can't Find Our Staff

If for any reason you can't immediately locate our staff, stay at the meeting point (the airport or the CDF Duty-Free Store): we'll find you there without any problem. After your registration is confirmed, you'll receive a document with all direct emergency contacts.

🚖 Departure Recommendations

Check-out from the guesthouse is by 12:00 on Saturday. The return transfer is not included, as participants have very different flight times. Our staff will be on hand to help you book a taxi or tuk-tuk to the airport or bus station.

🕑 Journey Time

The guesthouse is approximately 10–15 minutes by taxi from Siem Reap Airport.

🗓️ Recommended Return Flight Times

We recommend booking return flights from Saturday afternoon onwards, giving you plenty of time to leave the guesthouse at a relaxed pace and reach the airport without rushing.

🌏 Continuing Your Journey

If you plan to continue travelling in Cambodia or another country, let us know in advance — we'll be happy to provide useful contacts and suggestions to help you plan the next leg of your trip.

💡 After Confirmation

Once your participation is confirmed, you'll receive a detailed document by email with all up-to-date information, emergency numbers, and practical instructions for arrival and departure.
