About section

A hands-on building and renovation project supporting community schools across different parts of Cambodia, working with the same local NGO.

This project comes out of working with a single local NGO active across different parts of Cambodia, including Siem Reap and Samraong, with the aim of improving the educational spaces used by children in the local communities. The two locations work to the same vision and method: the schools and contexts change, but the activities and the approach stay the same.

As a participant, you'll join building, renovation and maintenance work at community schools: classrooms, toilets, common spaces and outdoor areas. The activities include painting, light masonry, sorting paths, putting materials together and general support to the local teams. No previous experience needed: the project is designed for people who are happy to work as a team, learn by doing and share time with the communities who live and use these spaces every day.

FAQs

🏡 Your accommodation in Cambodia

You'll stay at a Cambodian-style guesthouse used as a volunteer centre, based in Siem Reap or Samraong depending on your project assignment. A simple, practical setting designed for group life and exchange between participants.

🛏️ Rooms and comfort
Shared rooms (2–4 people), separated by gender
• Bunk beds with linen provided
Fan in the room
• Lockers or lockable spaces for personal items
• Cold showers and shared bathrooms

🍽️ Meals
3 meals a day on weekdays, 2 at weekends

• Vegetarian options on request
• Drinking water, tea and coffee always available

🌿 Common spaces
• Common room for downtime and shared moments
• Terraces or outdoor areas for socialising
• An international, welcoming atmosphere

💬 Living the community
The accommodation is a shared home, not a hotel. This is where friendships, conversations and the most grounded part of your time in Cambodia tend to take shape.
🛡️ Safety and support

Safety is a priority across every project. The settings and activities are picked carefully to give you a calm, well-managed environment that respects the local context.

🔹 Background checks
A criminal record check (DBS or equivalent) is required before you travel, as a standard step to look after the communities and the participants.

🔹 Constant local presence
Experienced Cambodian coordinators are always there during the activities and reachable outside working hours too.

🔹 24/7 support
You'll have ongoing support from the local team and, if needed, from our UK team too.

🔹 A few sensible habits
✔ Move around in groups
✔ Follow the coordinators' pointers
✔ Adapt to local rhythms and customs

💡 Our aim
To give you a safe, mindful and grounded experience, where the value lies in everyday sharing and the work done together.
🧭 Orientation day

Your first Monday in Cambodia is for orientation: a key moment to settle in, get to know the group and feel out the context where you'll be living and working.

Through the day you'll cover:

• Welcome meeting and programme introduction
• House rules, health and safety
• An introduction to Khmer culture, with first words and pointers on local customs
• Practical info on transport, SIM cards and daily life
• A walk around the area, with markets and useful services
• First contact with the team and the project

From Tuesday you'll start the activities with more confidence and a clearer feel for the place.
✈️ Arrival tips

We'd recommend booking a flight into Siem Reap Angkor International Airport (SAI). Our welcome service runs on Sunday between 06:00 and 18:00. In that window the local team will sort the transfer to the city or to the volunteer centre.

📍 Meeting point

At the airport, a member of the local staff will be waiting with a "TGL CAMBODIA" sign. It's important not to leave the meeting area if you can't spot the coordinator straight away: they may be waiting for other participants.

🕒 Transfer time

Airport to Siem Reap centre: about 1–1.5 hours (airport bus plus local transfer). Siem Reap to Samraong (if assigned): about 2 hours by taxi.

💡 Out-of-hours arrivals

Arrivals outside the standard window don't include a pickup. You can either make your own way or request a special pickup with a supplement.

🚖 Heading home: return flight tips

Check-out is on the Saturday by 12:00. The return transfer isn't included, but the local staff will help you arrange a taxi or bus to the airport.

💡 Once your booking is confirmed

We'll email you a full pack with up-to-date instructions, local contacts and step-by-step pointers for your arrival.
