About section

A community farming project in rural Kenya, working closely with the local team, learning sustainable farming basics and getting into everyday life at the centre.

In Ahero, in the heart of Kisumu County, the Community Resource Centre exists to strengthen the local community's self-reliance through agriculture, training and sharing skills. Here, the land isn't just a resource: it's an educational tool. People grow food to feed, to learn and to pass on practical knowledge for the long term.

The agriculture project plugs you into a model farm with vegetable plots, greenhouses and a poultry unit, used both for production and to train people from the area. As a participant, you'll work alongside the local staff in the daily work: planting, looking after crops, maintaining the spaces and supporting the farm activities. A grounded experience that teaches the value of hands-on work, natural rhythms and working together.

The Weekly Program

Weekdays

From Monday to Friday, your days mostly happen at the Ahero Community Resource Centre, on the community farm and the centre's growing areas. The work is hands-on and physical: working in the fields, looking after crops, supporting the poultry unit and maintaining shared spaces.

Because of the warm climate, the activities are mostly in the cooler hours of the day. The afternoon is usually for resting, community life or informal moments to chat with the local staff and the other participants.

08:00Breakfast and getting ready for the day
09:00Starting the farm activities at the community farm
11:00Field work: planting, irrigation, weeding, looking after crops or supporting the poultry unit
13:00Lunch break and rest during the warmer hours
16:00Free time, community life or light maintenance work
19:30Shared dinner at the centre and free time with the other volunteers

Weekend

Weekends are free of set activities. A good time to slow down, recharge and take in the area informally. If you fancy it, you can visit Kisumu, head around Lake Victoria, get out into nature, or just stay at the centre and spend time with the community.
