About section

An educational project in a rural Kenyan community that lets you work alongside local teachers in a community nursery school, sharing time, activities, and daily life with children and local staff.

In Ahero, a rural community in the Kisumu region, the Community Resource Centre's nursery school is far more than a classroom: it's a safe space where children take their first steps in learning, play, and connecting with others. Here, education happens through everyday gestures, shared routines, and a great deal of personal attention — in a setting with limited resources but a strong sense of community.

This project was born to support local teachers in their day-to-day work, bringing more time, presence, and care to children aged 3 to 6. As a participant, you're not replacing anyone: you observe, collaborate, play, learn, and help create a calm and nurturing environment. An experience that puts you in direct contact with the community and lets you understand, from the inside, what early childhood education looks like in a world very different from your own.

The Weekly Program

Weekdays

Monday to Friday, days are spent mainly at the Ahero Community Resource Centre's kindergarten, working alongside local teachers in educational and care activities with children aged 3 to 6.

Activities include classroom support, educational games, creative sessions, and help at mealtimes. Afternoons are generally lighter and may include tidying up, debriefing with staff, or moments of community life. The rest of the day is dedicated to rest, connecting with other volunteers, and everyday life at the centre.
