About section

A community education project in rural Kenya, working alongside local teachers in a community kindergarten and sharing time, activities and daily life with children and educators.

In Ahero, a rural community in Kisumu County, the kindergarten at the Community Resource Centre is much more than a school. It's a safe space where children take their first steps in learning, play and getting on with each other. Education here happens through everyday moments, shared routines and plenty of personal attention, in a setting with limited resources but a strong sense of community.

The project is there to support the local teachers in the day-to-day, giving more time, presence and care to children aged 3 to 6. As a participant, you're not "replacing" anyone: you observe, lend a hand, play, learn and help create a calm, stimulating space. It's an experience that puts you in direct contact with the community and gives you a closer look, from the inside, at how early-years education works in a setting that's probably very different from your own.

Why participate

The Weekly Program

Weekdays

From Monday to Friday, your days mostly happen at the Ahero Community Resource Centre kindergarten, alongside the local teachers in educational activities and looking after children aged 3 to 6.

Activities include classroom support, educational games, creative moments and helping out at mealtimes. The afternoon is usually lighter, with tidying spaces, time to chat with the staff or moments of community life. The rest of the day is for resting, spending time with the other volunteers and getting on with daily life at the centre.
